Day 5
After a quiet morning (and Lulu crying “I come too”) we grab a taxi, a train, a plane and finally a mini-bus after de-planing in Penang.
We’ve been scanning the weather forecasts for days and a survey of ten internet weather sites gave roughly ten different predictions, but most pointed to rain.
Our driver, Charlie, assured us it hadn’t rained all day.
So far so good.

Day 4
Today’s outing was to the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen. The purpose was two-fold: firstly to see what all the great shopping hype was about and secondly to meet my Bridge Base Online friend Michael Sun and his wife Ma Lan.
The shopping was as we’d been warned, stall-holders accosting you from the moment you left the train station. It reminded much of the Marrakesh I visited in 1987. The touts knew how to get Eddie’s attention – they would mention Game Boy and his head would do 360s.
After shopping we caught a taxi to Michael and Lan’s house and then walked to a terrific restaurant for Dim Sum.
Linda received street cred points from Lan for being able to order in Mandarin and the kids got style points for using chopsticks. Lunch was long and plentiful, not to mention delicious. Afterwards we walked to large upmarket shopping centre and had ice creams at KFC.

This morning we caught a ferry to Cheung Chau, a small island 30 minutes away and about 100 years different from the Hong Kong we are used to. It’s a small fishing village.
We wandered around for a while then grabbed a delicious meal at the Baccarat Restaurant and ate prawns, squid, beef and a particularly tasty pidgeon sang choy bow. Can you see the poor bird’s head and wings?
it really is a magical place

Day 2
The sights, the smells, the atmosphere, everything was fun-filled, fatty and very Disney.
Hong Kong DisneyLand was everything and more than it was cracked up to be.
By far, my personal favourite was the Space Mountain indoor rollercoaster, which I must admit I would not have gone on had I seen it beforehand. But, as always it was an extremely enjoyable experience.
My top tip: Beat the queues and wait a maximum of 30 seconds by arriving before the 10:00 opening time.

Day 2
It took four modes of transport – shuttle bus, plane, train, taxi … but we finally made it to Chateau Bennett-King.
Hong Kong is as we remembered it – chaotic traffic, lots of people and humidity off the scale. Nellie and Lulu were beside themselves in excitement to see their cousins. Here’s a picture of the four of them after breakfast.
as usual we wake up before the birds

Day 1
It’s about 5am and everyone is up, last minute packing, awaiting the shuttle bus to pick us up. Well, everyone but Alice… we need an earthquake to get her moving before 7am usually.
The house is very quiet without the pitter patter of Jerry through the house. He’s having his own holiday at the puppy farm.
Next stop – Kingsford Smith International Airport.
